Director of Children’s Education
South Roanoke United Methodist Church
 

Purpose
To develop and lead a ministry which provides the children of the church with opportunities to begin their journeys in faith and to use their talents to the glory of God. 

Accountability
In accordance with the Discipline of the
United Methodist Church, the Pastor, appointed by the Bishop, has oversight of all facets of church programs in the day-to-day life of the church and, as such, the Director of Children’s Education, along with all staff, is under the general supervision of the Pastor.  The Discipline gives the Staff-Parish Relations Committee the responsibility for annual evaluations, salary adjustments, benefits, etc., for all staff members. 

General Requirements
      ·        
Work to support our mission statement, “As Christ cares, we care.”
      ·        
Experience working with children in Christian education is preferred.
      ·        
Work and communicate well with other staff members of the church, particularly in efforts to
            recruit and keep new families in the church.

      ·        
Work with staff members to see that children are integrated into all church ministries as much
            as possible.

      ·        
Maintain a flexible attitude and manner.  The church staff members work as a team and will
            assist each other as program needs arise.

      ·        
Attend quarterly Administrative Board meetings.
      ·        
Attend conferences, workshops, and seminars each year to update and strengthen
            professional knowledge, skills, and abilities and to promote spiritual growth.

       ·        
Communicate the vision for children’s programming to the church membership, participants,
            and community. 

      ·        
Work with the Education Coordinator to stay within the education budget as set by the
            Finance Committee.
 

Sunday School

·         Coordinate children’s Sunday school (ages preschool through grade 5) as detailed below with assistance from the volunteer Education, Elementary, and Preschool Coordinators.

·         Develop and implement an education program to meet the needs of our children.

·         Be present on Sunday mornings (8:45 a.m. until 11:45 a.m.) to lead gathering time for children and assist in coverage as needed.

·         Provide appropriate curriculum, resources, and supplies.

·         Recruit, train, support, and supervise teachers and education volunteers.

·         Provide clear job descriptions and expectations for volunteers.

·         Assist teachers and volunteers in implementing a child-friendly environment in classrooms and hallways.

·         Show thanks and appreciation to volunteers.

·         Notify parents of programs and events on a regular basis through regular mail, email, the church bulletin, and the church newsletter.

·         Maintain attendance records, and use them for follow-up contact of children who are not attending regularly.

·         Maintain, update, and organize the resource room.

·         Gather supplies and equipment for teachers as needed.

·         Help build enthusiasm and community among our children and their parents.

 Vacation Bible School

·         Serve as director or recruit director.

·         Recruit teachers and volunteers.

·         Assist in choosing curriculum and program.

·         Assist in scheduling and organizing.

 Other Programs

·         Supervise paid staff and volunteers in the nursery with the assistance of the volunteer Preschool Coordinator.

·         Supervise paid staff in Children’s Church.

·         Assist with weekly Children’s Church worship time as needed.

·         Work with  Minister of Youth and Children as a backup and resource for midweek activities for Pre-K (Jelly Bellies,) Grades K – 2 (Junior Mints,) Grades 3 – 5 (Peanut M&Ms.)

 Work Schedule
Work a minimum of 10 hours per week on job duties, activities, and programs which are related to, arise from, or are a part of children’s ministry in the church. 

Ninety Day Probationary Period
The staff member and congregation will begin the employment relationship on a probationary basis for a period of ninety days during which time either party may terminate that relationship without further obligation.  At the end of the 90 days, the Senior Pastor and chair of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee will conduct a review.
