People Who Inspire Us
2 Thess. 1:1-4, 11-12

I invite you during the coming weeks to be in prayer about your commitment to Jesus Christ and His Church. As Charles Shedd has written, “The inner radiance of Christian living can only be experienced when we are living as Christ directs our doing.” Is your supply of Christian joy running low? If so, why? Are you giving enough time to His service? Are you using your talents for His Kingdom? What about your stewardship of possessions? Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.” (Matt. 6:21)

If you are not already setting aside a certain percentage of your income to be shared with the Church on a weekly basis, let me encourage you to begin this practice. Not only will others benefit through your systematic giving, but you will be blessed spiritually. Those of us at South Roanoke UMC who tithe have discovered that by sharing 10% of our incomes, we have become better stewards of the remaining 90% of our incomes. Moonyeen and I started tithing in the midst of a large hospital bill, car payments and seminary tuition – and the phenomenal thing about it all was that we had enough money to meet our monthly payments! Tithing has become a part of our life style.

How does one begin to tithe? First, determine the percentage of your income that you are currently giving to God.
If it is 3%, for example, increase that amount by 1, 2, 3%, each year until you reach 10%. This allows one time to work through personal issues and to make the appropriate adjustments in priorities. None of this is possible though unless one is open to God’s guidance through prayer.
In the worship service and church school, you have heard the call for God’s people to be in Christian mission. Let me encourage you to use your talents to the glory of God. There is not one of us who does not have at least one talent. Perhaps your talent is befriending the needy, teaching a church school class, singing in the choir, serving as an usher, sharing your material possessions, witnessing to what you believe is right through word and deed, attending worship and church school each Sunday or serving as a model for your children.
I dare say that you have a lot to give! Don’t let your talents wither and die. “We will not pass this way but once.” What will you leave to be passed on to future generations? Hopefully, it will be a life lived for Christ.

     Yours in Christ,
     Amos Rideout

The Council on Ministries’ Monthly Focus
Stewardship —————
————————————

The theme of this year’s stewardship campaign recognizes that Christian Stewardship is much more than the collection of pledge cards in order to meet the financial demands of the Church and its programs. So, our focus this year is not upon specific budgetary needs, but rather upon each member’s spiritual development and Christian commitment.
Consecration Sunday, scheduled for November 11, includes two special events: first, the morning worship, followed by a Celebration Luncheon (catered, not pot-luck) immediately after the service. Please plan now to attend this special event.
Your attendance is very important at the worship services on Sunday, November 4 and 11. You will be given some important information on November 4, at the 11:00 service, and on the 11th you will be given your pledge card, and you will have the opportunity to present your card at the altar. Following the service on November 11, and the catered luncheon, you will be given the total of pledges for 2002.

Preschool News

We are happy to have 40 students enrolled in our Preschool and MDO programs for this school year. There are a few more spaces available so please feel free to contact us if you have need for our services (982-3707).
Many, many thanks to the wonderful people who sent in items for our wish list this summer. We have been fortunate to have many of our needs met and sincerely appreciate your support. We can always use help at our preschool, so if you would like to volunteer to help in some way, just give us a call.
District Conference & Leadership Training Event

On November 11, at 2:30-5:30 PM, the Roanoke District Conference and Leadership Training Event will be at First United Methodist Church, Salem. The District Conference will be from 2:30-3:45, and the Leadership Training following. Classes in all areas of church ministry will be offered. Cokesbury will have a display in the Fellowship Hall for you to browse and purchase what you need.
Appalachian Service Project
Our group of youth and adult missionaries gave their testimonies at our Contemporary Worship Service on October 10 as a way of celebrating and bringing closure to our 2001 mission trip. If you didn’t get to be there, I hope you’ll look at the missions bulletin board in the hall by the Office. Enough remembrances, we filled out the application for 2002 and sent it off last week. So, now it’s time to recruit for next summer’s missionary team. If you are interested in participating - contact Tim and let him know. (We won’t know the date of the trip until our application is accepted in early December.)
Contemporary Worship Service

Our Contemporary Worship Service is enjoying a wonderful fall. The feelings of warmth and friendship abound as we meet together to praise and worship our God. In the past month we have had messages shared with us by youth and adults alike. We even had one delivered through song. If you need a little boost to help you get through the week, we hope that you will join us from 7-7:40 every Wednesday Night.

Youth News ***

YOUTH
October was a busy month for Youth Ministry at SRUMC. We started the month off with our 8th annual group building trips for the Jr and Sr Highs. We had 24 folks at the Jr High weekend and 18 at the Sr High weekend. While there, they did various trust games, participated in a ropes course, and ended each weekend with worship on Sunday morning. We want to thank Jean Wallace for allowing us to take over her cabin in Fincastle for two weekends in a row.
As I said, October was busy. Over 20 of our youth helped to raise money for youth missions by participating in our District Haunted Hay ride at Camp Alta Mons and another group went up to Wintergreen to help them man a haunted cabin in return for 20 free ski passes that we donate to under privileged kids.
All this.... and we sponsored our first ever Pumpkin Patch. At the time of this writing, I don’t know the outcome - but I know that we couldn’t have done it without the leadership of Jeannie Whitaker, with help from Mark Knopf and Dawn Long. In case you are wondering where the money is going, our Youth decided that the funds raised from the sales of the pumpkins will go to help the victims of the terrorist attacks as well as needs of local service and missions projects.
Don’t forget, our UMYF meets every Sunday from 6-8:00PM, and our Totally Tuesday group meets every Tuesday from 2-5:00 PM.

Our 3-5 grade group of youth that meet every Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 is off to a great start. We started with a pool party at the Wheelocks and since then have been to the Roanoke Campground learning about God’s creation, learned about trust and friendships during our regular meetings and even spent an afternoon playing Putt Putt; (where Kemper Steffe aced the course). Upcoming activities include craft days as well as visitations to our “older” members.

BIBLE CLASS
Ten of our children (3-4 grades) have participated in an eight week course on learning how to use your Bible. They will be receiving their Bibles during our worship service on November 25. Thanks go to Jill Woolwine, Kathy Cain, and Patti Oshida for helping to teach this class.

WE RECENTLY RECEIVED a letter from Bertha Robertson’s daughter letting us know that she is doing fine in her new location at the retirement home in Virginia Beach. She says that Bertha is adjusting to her new home, but misses her friends in Roanoke. Bertha has appreciated all of the cards and notes from her friends here at South Roanoke. Please continue to remember Bertha in  your prayers.

IT’S ALMOST WINTER AGAIN and none of us, fortunately, have to face the bitter cold without a warm coat. Roanoke has become home to a group of 14 young men from Sudan, refugees from a group referred to as the "Lost Boys" featured in a story on "60 Minutes." They are excited about starting their new lives here in Roanoke, however, they face the coming winter without heavy coats. Currently, they work at Rowe Furniture Co., however, the little money they make goes to living expenses. They are also paying back the United States State Department which paid their flight and relocation fees. Let’s extend the hand of friendship South Roanoke UMC is known for and help them by donating gently worn or new coats in men’s sizes medium to large/XL talls. Monetary donations would also help in purchasing new coats. The refugee service which helps provide guidance to these young men has also expressed the need for carpet remnants or area rugs for the apartment floors where the young men live. If you would like to donate coats or rugs to this worthy cause, or if you have any questions, please call Diane D’Orazio at 725-9886. Thank you for your generosity.

ADVENT DEVOTIONAL BOOKLETS are available in the narthex for your use during this Christmas season. Please pick up a copy as you leave today.

1. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: The Bible makes the purpose of tithing very clear - to put God first in our lives. We are to give God the first and best of what we earn. For example, what we do first with our money shows what we value most. Giving the first part of our paycheck to God immediately focuses our attention on him. It also reminds us that all we have belongs to him. A habit of regular tithing can keep God at the top of our priority list and give us a proper perspective on everything else we have.

3. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: God does not prevent human beings from acting inhumanely, but keeps on demanding righteousness, justice, mercy and harmony.
