REIGN OF CHRIST/
CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY
Rev. Cheryl Harrison-Davidson preaching
Pastor, Fairview United Methodist Church

You are asked to read and study the text each week in preparation for worship.

Teaching is one of my favorite things I do in ministry.  As I have heard from so many other teachers, the one who teaches always learns more than those who are taught.  For me, teaching becomes a wonderful learning opportunity.

So far this year in my own study I have had the opportunity to grow in my understanding of the nature of spiritual gifts, the United Methodist understanding of evangelism, the ministry of faith-sharing, the role and practice of clergy in nurturing healthy congregations and current theological perspectives on the Christian faith.  It is always my goal that my preaching, teaching and pastoral leadership benefits from these learning opportunities.  Much of my study in this regard has been inspired by your encouragement and desire that I should teach for small groups on occasion.

At this writing I am concluding a study with two of our adult Sunday School classes (Pathfinders and Aldersgate) on “Faith-Sharing” (I’ll complete this with one more adult class after the first of the year [Wesley Class]).

Next month I will offer again my periodic “Pastor’s Inquiry Class:”
Sundays beginning November 4, 9:30 am—10:00 am

in the library

“What is God Like?”

Conclusion

If you are new to our church or simply want to know more about the Christian Faith and United Methodism, I invite you to join me.  I have found this opportunity to be a particularly filling one for me and those who participate.

It is my prayer that in our teaching and our learning we may experience a growing maturity in our faith together.

Rev. Bill

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK

ADVENT ANGEL PROGRAM

A special thank you to those who helped and the many people who were willing to help host the families in the Interfaith Hospitality Network the week of October 7-14th.    While there was only one family of five that actually came into the network on SRUMC’s last day of hosting, thank you to all of the volunteers who were willing to donate their time & make food and who were so flexible when they were cancelled because the family didn’t arrive until a day later than expected!  You are all truly appreciated!
Please mark your calendar for the week of December 16th – 23rd when SRUMC hosts the families of the Interfaith Hospitality Network at the youth house.  SRUMC is responsible for providing meals, evening & overnight hosts for Sunday the 16th & Saturday the 22nd.   In addition, we will need assistance picking up the trailer with the cots from the prior week’s host congregation.  While this is a very busy time of year, if you haven’t helped out recently, please consider helping out with this wonderful mission.  Remember, the IHN helps
local homeless families get back on their feet.  Anyone interested in helping with meals, please contact Ellie Clark at 721-3340 or Nancy Cumins for overnights at 985-0265.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

WELCOME!
We're glad to have all who have joined us for this time of worship. Especially to our guests and visitors, we welcome you to South Roanoke and to our fellowship. We invite those who have no church home to make South Roanoke your church and add your witness to ours.

THE DEADLINE for articles for the December/January issue of the Tower Times is November 15. Send articles to Kate Garrett or email to kgarrett@benefitsmanagement.com. Articles can be sent at any time prior to the deadline.

THE PECANS Katherine Jacocks used to order for members of SRUMC are available again.  If you would like to place an order please look on the bulletin board by the church parlor and fill out the order form. Orders will be delivered before Thanksgiving. Deadline for orders to be placed is Monday, November 5.

THE AFTERCARE SOCIAL CLUB WILL meet on Tuesday, November 6 at 6:00 p.m. for dinner out. If you would like more information regarding our Social Club please call bonnie dayton, 981-0237.

PLEASE DONATE gently used baby clothes and supplies. These are needed to help a staff member at Famous Anthony’s. She is due in November and is in need of non-gender specific clothing and diapers. Please call Paula at 344-4437 ext. 16 with any questions.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW for the December 13th ADULT FELLOWSHIP GROUP outing. Hotel Roanoke will be the destination to see the Christmas display, and then we will have lunch in the Regency Room. Cost will be $3.00 plus lunch. Departure time from the church will be 10:45 a.m., and lunch is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Must register on the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board by December 2.

THE JANUARY PROGRAM for the Adult Fellowship Group will be on Thursday the 17th, with lunch at noon. The speaker will be from the art museum. Cost will be $7.00. January 10th will be the deadline to register for this activity. Everyone is welcome!

THE FACILITY NEEDS TASK GROUP HAS COMPLETED ITS STUDY. Their report and recommendations were presented to the Board of Trustees on October 22 for their further action. Copies of the report are available in the narthex or the church office for your information. The Trustees will keep the congregation informed as to their determination and progress on these items. The Task Group is grateful to all groups and individuals who shared their ideas and concerns in the development of this comprehensive list. We are grateful to the Facility Needs Task Group for their dedicated work: Calvin Witt (Chair), Natalie Rude, Tom Ruble (Representative of the Board of Trustees), and Prentice Moran (Representative of the Parsonage Committee).

LOOK FOR THE ADVENT ANGEL TREE to be up before Thanksgiving. Again this year, our Angels will come from the Henry Fork Service Center in Rocky Mount and the Clearbrook Community in Roanoke County. The angels on the tree are one-gift-only kids. We have about 40 special angels who need extra help. These children come from families in crisis; we will be providing their entire Christmas—toys, clothes, coats, etc. These angels will require an expenditure of $150 or more. They will not be on the tree. If you want to adopt one of our special angels, call Terry Wilkinson (772-0490) or Dawn Long (989-2837). Angel gifts are due back no later than Sunday, December 16. You are invited to join your church family for a very special celebration and dedication of the angel gifts at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 16.

THE MILL MOUNTAIN RINGERS, Roanoke’s new community handbell group, under the direction of Joe Kennedy will present their first concert on Saturday, November 10, at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Everyone is invited to come enjoy the bells!

2006 ADVENT OFFERING HELPS WITH KATRINA RELIEF AND “NOTHING BUT NETS”. The Bishops of our church recently issued a new appeal for Hurricane Katrina relief to assist with the continuing recovery. At the Virginia Annual Conference this year a challenge was issued to support the “Nothing But Nets” outreach to provide mosquito netting for malaria-prone areas of Africa where a child dies of the disease every 30 seconds. South Roanoke Church has responded to these needs in the amount of $500 each (total $1,000) through the “National Needs Response” and “World Needs Response” designations of last year’s Advent Offering. Your continuing support of our seasonal offerings helps us respond to emerging needs without asking for a special offering.

TO DATE WE HAVE RECEIVED $343,995.00 in pledges for 2008. Please use one of the pledge cards in the pew racks if you have not yet had the chance to make your pledge.  This puts us $168,434.00 short of our pledges for 2007. Please prayerfully consider what you will give to the ministry of your church.

DON’T FORGET TO BRING your non-perishable food items to church with you next Sunday (the first Sunday of each month) to be used to help the hungry in our own area.

You will find Pledge Cards
In the pews for 2008
Please prayerfully consider what you
Will give to
YOUR church next year.
Cards may be placed in the offering plates
