The Stewardship of Gifts

As members of this congregation, will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your… gifts?              Baptismal Covenant I, p. 3

Money isn’t everything…but it sure feels like it sometimes!  There are few things in our lives that cause us more anxiety, more frustration or become the focus of our emotional and spiritual energy than money.  When we don’t have enough we often feel inadequate, envious and perplexed that we cannot properly provide for our ourselves and our children.  When we are blessed with a certain amount of wealth money still consumes us with its uncanny ability to fill up our lives with things that do not mean as much to us when we have them as we had first imagined.  The culture in which we live has instilled in us an obsession for the accumulation of possessions that leaves our dreams unsatisfied and our lives unfulfilled.

The church has the cure for this disease.  The church can give us a chance to free ourselves from this obsession and accept the gift of life God intends for us through Jesus Christ.  We can grow more spiritually mature through the stewardship of giving.

Each year our church guides us to grow in our faith in keeping with the vow we take as people of God. This seasonal emphasis calls us to become more spiritually mature in the four aspects of stewardship:

February—April The Stewardship of Prayer
May—July
The Stewardship of Presence
August—October
The Stewardship of Gifts
November—January
The Stewardship of Service

When your church invites you to consider what percentage of your income you give back to God we are not just interested in funding our ministry together for the coming year.  Your act of commitment to the Stewardship of Gifts is a spiritual practice that grows in you your own sense of dependency upon and trust in God.  I am convinced that there is no more effective way to free us of our obsessions than the practice of giving.
