Youth Sunday

 You are asked to read and study the text each week in preparation for worship.

Evangelism:  Sharing Good News

 How were you first introduced to the church?  How was it that you first came to the Christian community?  A national survey interviewed current church members to identify how they were first introduced to the church:

  5 % walked in (visited the church on their own);
  6 % were attracted to the minister;
  3 % came because of the programs;
  1 % were invited through visitation efforts;
  5 % came through the Sunday School;

80% by the influence of friends, neighbors, and relatives

How did you first come to the church?  If you are like most people, a good friend, a friendly neighbor, or a loving member of your family introduced you to the community of faith.

 The focus of our emphasis on the Stewardship of Prayer during this season of Lent is Evangelism:  Sharing Good News.   Through a series of sermons, “stewardship moments,” and opportunities for personal commitment we seek to grow more spiritually mature in the skill and practice of sharing our faith.

 On Sunday, March 4, you are invited to bring forward during worship your “Stewardship of Prayer Commitment Card” that was sent in a recent mailing.  Please be in prayer for a friend, relative, acquaintance, or neighbor during this holy season and ask God so to guide you in your relationship with them that you will find the opportunity to invite them to come to church with you.  After all, that is how most of us came to the church in the first place!

Handbell Purchase

ADULT FELLOWSHIP GROUP

A goal of the music department this year is to expand our set of bells.  Our 4 octaves of bells are played by all age groups in the church.  Over the years our adult bell choir has progressed to becoming one of the best bell choirs in Roanoke. As we have grown in numbers and expertise, we now want to add a 5th octave to our bell set.  At present, we are borrowing bells from other churches each time we play.

We have a goal of raising $7000 to cover the set of bells and related expenses. To date, we have received $2,700 of this amount. A list of the cost of each individual bell is available in the music room - there are 6 small bells and 6 large bells.  Individual bells can be given as memorials or contributions can be made to the total amount.  If you have questions or would like further information please contact Joe Kennedy.

We take off to Blacksburg on March 1 to tour the National Weather Service facility.  We will leave the church at 9:00 a.m. and lunch will be at The Cracker Barrel in Christiansburg.

  We will have our lunch at the church on March 15. Our guest speaker will be Cara Modisette of Leisure Publishing (The Roanoker Magazine).

 For our trip in April, Nancy Leslie and I have planned a Mystery Trip to a location much in the news at this time. We will be gone 3 days and 2 nights - April 2-4 - and will take the church bus so only 14 people can go.  Don’t be left out, sign-up NOW!!

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

The Wimmer Sunday School Class invites you!

Our Senior Pastor, Bill Davidson, is teaching Faith-Sharing, a video-based class designed to foster growth and maturity in the spiritual discipline and skill of evangelism.

The Pathfinders Class continues to enjoy a great time of fellowship and service.  We are currently studying the Book of Acts (covering two chapters a week) and should be completing our study in May.

As for our service project in February, we enjoyed preparing and serving a chili dinner for the Interfaith Hospitality Network on Feb. 18. Thanks to all the Pathfinders who donated items for the dinner!  A special “thank you” to Roxanne Davenport and Elizabeth Carroll who served the dinner that night!

For our next service project, we will be making a baked spaghetti dinner for the Wednesday night Lenten service on March 21.  Until then, we will be continuing our good fellowship an covering chapters 11—16 in the Book of Acts.

The Aldersgate Class has recently finished a lesson on Christian symbolism in art.  We are currently looking at several options for our next study.  These include works by C.S. Lewis, Great Stories Within the Bible and Stewardship.

We will begin one of these studies February 25th.

The Wesley Class will have Rev. Bob Garner teaching “The Faith of our Founding Fathers’ in March.

If you are not a member of one of our Sunday School classes please join us for one of our exciting and informative sessions!

KISUMU MINISTRIES

Dear Rev. Bill,

I received a check in the mail from South Roanoke UMC in the amount of $2000 and made out to the Kisumu Sister City Committee for the Kisumu ministries.

Please thank everyone in your congregation and the Missions Committee for this generous donation from the Advent Concert proceeds.  It will be mailed to our friend and incountry administrator, Dr. Ruby Sokwala, in Kisumu who will depost it into our Medical Fund for the four ministries: Agape Children’s Home, Salem Orphanage, Kisumu Hospice and the New Life Babies Home.

Kenya went through a particularly lengthy rainy season which ended in early January.  As a result, the number of cases of malaria, typhoid and cholera skyrocketed especially in the kids.  Our Medical Fund had almost gotten depleted from caring for so many sick children in the ministries.  The check from SRUMC is an answer to prayer.  On behalf of the kids in Kisumu, we thank you!

In His Grip,
Diane D’Orazio, Chairman
Kisumu Sister City Committee

UNITED METHODIST MEN

  I was very pleased with the UMM supporting one our most needy Angel Tree children during Christmas.  We were able to provide most of his needs along with some nice gifts for this eleven year old boy during the holidays.  We are now concentrating on future months.  On January 20th we discussed some future endeavors such as working / touring at the Rescue Mission and getting speakers for future monthly meetings along with a Sweetheart Dinner in the Spring.  We encourage all the men of the church to join us at the next meeting on February 20th.  The location will be posted in the church bulletin in February.

The Mary Ragland Circle, formerly known as the Knight Thyme Circle, is currently studying the series Connecting in Christ Together (six sessions on Fellowship).  Their usual meeting time is the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 in an individual member’s home.
