February 25
1st Sunday in Lent
Sermon Series 1:

Evangelism: Sharing the Good News Telling Your Story
Psalm 91:1-2, Deuteronomy 26:1-11

You are asked to read and study the text each week in preparation for worship.

Evangelism:  Sharing Good News!

When was the last time you invited a friend, relative, acquaintance or neighbor to church?

This season of Lent we are challenged to grow in our spiritual lives through the theme:  “Evangelism:  Sharing Good News.”  We will share in this experience in a number of ways:

Our Stewardship of Prayer emphasis centers our prayer life on our   spiritual growth in evangelism and lifts up those who are not now active   in a church community.  During the Lenten season you are invited to   attend weekly one of our 20-minute prayer gatherings:

Evening Prayer   Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
Morning Prayer   Wednesdays at 7 a.m.
  Midday Prayer   Wednesdays at Noon

Evangelism:  Sharing Good News! is the focus of our Wednesday   Lenten Dinners and Lenten Services as our guest preachers share their   own perspectives on personal evangelism.

I will preach a sermon series on this theme at the beginning of the   season.  I will also be teaching the General Board of Discipleship   curriculum Faith Sharing to our adult Sunday School Classes throughout   the year.

Our worship during Lent will provide personal opportunities to come   forward for prayer as we seek to grow more spiritually mature in this   aspect of our service in the name of Jesus.

Be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit to lead you to friends, relatives, acquaintances or neighbors for whom to pray.  Be open to your Lord’s invitation to invite them to come to church with you for a deeper relationship with Him.

When was the last time you invited a friend, relative, acquaintance or neighbor to church?  There is no better time than the season of Lent to grow more spiritually mature, for you and for them!

Rev. Bill

HANDBELL PURCHASE

A goal of the music department this year is to expand our set of bells. Our 4 octaves of bells are played by all age groups in the church. Over the years our adult bell choir has progressed to becoming one of the best bell choirs in Roanoke. As we have grown in numbers and expertise, we now want to add a 5th octave to our bell set. At present, we are borrowing bells from other churches each time we play. We have a goal of raising $7000.00 to cover the set of bells and related expenses. A GRATEFUL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Columbarium Memorial Wall

We have received the following note from Camp Alta Mons:

Thank you for the 100 chairs donated by South Roanoke UMC.  They have been placed in the Alta Mons dining hall to replace some fairly worn  chairs.  Please express to the church the camp’s appreciation for all it support to the camp. We are looking forward to the men and youth groups  constructing the cabin this spring.

  Yours in Christ’s Service,
  Bob Giesy, Director

The generous contribution by a number of members of our church of the new cushioned folding chairs in the fellowship hall made this gift possible

The attractive Memorial Wall which faces the front portion of the garden has been sparingly utilized. The intent was that deceased members who were responsible for organizing and financing South Roanoke United Methodist Church should be memorialized.
Any deceased former church member is eligible for their name to be placed on the Memorial Wall. In addition, his or her spouse, if not a member, as well as their children and spouses are eligible.
It is the wish of the Columbarium Committee that greater use of this meaningful facility be utilized. A committee of some senior members is searching church records for names of eligible deceased members in an effort to locate their heirs.
There is an urgency to complete this project in time for a special service on Memorial Day Sunday, May 27, 2007.
Any and all questions or suggestions may be directed to members of the Columbarium Committee or Search Committee:

News from BLAST-Bible Learning Adventure Stations

Our rotation Sunday school is sailing right along complete with Kevin the whale, a very large prop to help our K - 7th graders learn the lessons from the Jonah story.  Thanks to Terri Allen, Laura Long, Jacob Long, Katy Cain, William McIvor and the Kevorkian family (George, Ingrid, Isabella, Diana, Richard and Chris) for their help in building Kevin the whale!

Upcoming topics for the spring include  Psalm 8, Lent, Easter and Esther.  Our children and adult leaders are all enjoying experiencing Bible stories through art, science, drama, computers, games, video and cooking.  We ask adults for only a three week commitment at a time with minimal preparation needed.

RESCUE MISSION "WISH LIST" FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY:

O.T.C.’s (Over the counter medications) such as Tylenol, antifugal cream and products for headlice.

Each month the Rescue Mission highlights needs for their ministry to the homeless, those recovering from addictions and in the midst of life transitions.  Please bring your contributions to the church and place them in the box outside the main office.

UNITED METHODIST MEN

I was very pleased with the UMM supporting one our most needy Angel Tree children during Christmas.  We were able to provide most of his needs along with some nice gifts for this eleven year old boy during the holidays.  We are now concentrating on future months.  On January 20th we discussed some future endeavors such as working / touring at the Rescue Mission and getting speakers for future monthly meetings along with a Sweetheart Dinner in the Spring.  We encourage all the men of the church to join us at the next meeting on February 20th.  The location will be posted in the church bulletin in February.

The Mary Ragland Circle, formerly known as the Knight Thyme Circle, is currently studying the series Connecting in Christ Together (six sessions on Fellowship).  Their usual meeting time is the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 in an individual member’s home.

The lesson for this month is “Extreme Forgiveness.”  For this meeting we will gather in the library at South Roanoke United Methodist Church on Monday, February 26th at 7:30 p.m.

We would love to have new members.  Please contact Anne Ferguson at 345-2436 for more information.

ADMINISTRATIVE BOARD NEWS

New Staff Position Not Funded for 2007 - The Council on Ministries, as part of our 5-year plan, established a priority for spiritual growth.  One of the needs identified to support this priority is a new full-time staff position of Director of Children’s Ministry and Communication. During 2006, a job description was developed for this position and salary survey conducted of similar positions in the Conference to establish a salary commensurate with the required qualifications and duties.  Based on Council’s recommendations, the Staff Parish Relations Committee included this position in their 2007 budget request.  Finance committee initially included this position in developing the 2007 budget, but following the annual pledge campaign it became apparent that the shortfall between pledges and budget was very significant.  At that time, Finance requested all committees and work areas review their 2007 budget requests.  As part of this process, the Director of Children’s Ministry and Communication was not funded for 2007.

Staff has been discussing ways to cover the duties envisioned for this position in order to meet our ministry priorities.  In addition, The Administrative Board formed an ad hoc committee consisting of the chairs of COM, Finance, Trustees and Staff-Parish to conduct a Feasibility Study on ways to better align our staffing, programming and finances.  If you have any input for this committee, please share it with the members of this committee:  Andrew Sherman, Mark Hall, Tom Ruble, Ross Jefferies, and Patty Oshida..

District Superintendent Suggested Reading

On another matter, our District Superintendent, Stephen Hundley, reminded us at our Charge Conference that we need to emphasize prayer, seek out the Holy Spirit’s help and be obedient to God’s calling for our church.  Reverend Hundley’s suggested reading on this subject is a book titled “Waking to God’s Dream” by Dick Wills.  There are now two copies of this book in the church library.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES: We regret to inform the congregation that the wall and ceiling above the choir loft is again stained and peeling. Since the repair last summer the original source of the problem has finally been determined to be a steam leak in the heating system which is now being repaired. The Trustees will schedule painting as soon as possible and they appreciate your patience with this very difficult problem.
