Youth Sunday

You are asked to read and study the text each week in preparation for worship.

Prayer is the inner bath of love into which the soul plunges itself.

May these words of St. John Vianney (France, 19th Century), invite us into this season of Lent as we take up spiritual disciplines of prayer.  We emphasize the Stewardship of Prayer this season.  We do so as a part of our year-long comprehensive stewardship program designed to focus our attention on the vows we take when we enter the community of faith:

As a member of this congregation
will you faithfully participate in its ministries
  by your prayers, your presence
 your gifts and your service?

In many ways prayer is the beginning of stewardship.  If we are not in communication with the Owner, if we are neither aware of the guidance nor in tune with the desires of the Provider, we assume all we have is ours to use and abuse as we please.  Such is the story of creation since the fall.

Prayer is the steward’s lifeline.  It is the source of truth.  Only through prayer do we understand life is given by the grace of God, an undeserved gift.  Prayer helps us to lose our illusion that life only finds fulfillment when it is under complete control.  Once you take a deep “plunge” into “the inner bath of love” you find the strength and guidance to manage life’s affairs entrusted to you by a loving God.

I invite you to take up specific spiritual practices of prayer this Lenten season.  On March 5th you will have the opportunity to express that personal pledge with a “Stewardship of Prayer Commitment Card” during the service of worship.

The Christian concept of stewardship is more than just money.  Stewardship is the story of the Christian’s handling of this thing called life.  Only through prayer is it managed well at all.

Rev. Bill
