Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
       John 14:27a

At this writing I have just returned from celebrating the May 16th. 175th. anniversary of my first appointment, Concord Church in Sussex County.  Bishop Pennel led us in a wonderful time of worship, remembrance, and fellowship.  Immediately after seminary 27 years ago I became of the pastor of the South Sussex Charge (2 churches) while Cheryl served as pastor of the Sussex Charge (2 churches).  The people and community of Concord Church are particularly special to us for we made our very first parsonage home there.  It was good to see so many with whom we spent among the best four years of our lives.  They truly gave us a good beginning in ministry and sent us on our way well-prepared for service in the name of Christ.
Upon returning home that same day we enjoyed another treat.  The Talent Show!  What a wonderful time was had by all as persons of all ages and talents made for a truly unique celebration of the community we share in our church.
These two experiences, both in one day, brought to me once again the real gift the church gives to each of us--the gift of community.  Other organizations and groups can provide a sense of togetherness and can fulfill the deeply human need of companionship.  But only the church offers the fellowship of the Body of Christ where the peace of Christ reigns.
I knew that fellowship in my first appointment and enjoyed its renewal that Sunday morning.  I experienced it again that same Sunday night.  May that fellowship always sustain and nurture us as we seek to fulfill the vision Christ has for us in our service together that all may know that same peace.

Rev. Bill

The Adult Fellowship Group

Camp Alta Mons

We are off to the Wofhart Haus Theater in Wytheville on June 10. Leave the church at 10:30 to arrive for lunch at 12:00 at the theater and the musical Fiddler on the Roof at 2:00 PM. The cost of $33 includes everything.

Check the bulletin board for our new list of activities later in the summer. All adults of the church (of every age) are welcome to these programs/trips.

The current newsletter and new brochures are now available. Also, the camp needs volunteers to help with several construction projects as they prepare for the summer activities. They encourage teams from the area churches to assist in building fences, a horse barn, hogans, etc. If you are able to volunteer, just let them know when you can come and they will have materials ready and provide lunch. You can visit the camp's web site at http://www.altamons.org/ for more information and online registration for summer camp.

Wesley Class Invitation

A Celebration

If you are looking for great fellowship on Sunday morning, please come to the WESLEY CLASS at 9:45 A.M. Rev. Bob Garner will continue to lead a study of the historical view of the Old Testament until the end of May. Bob’s knowledge and insight of the Bible plus his humor, make an interesting study. Everyone is welcome!

The family of Janet and Reuben Knopf invites the congregation to drop by the Fellowship Hall following services on Sunday, June 6 to help celebrate Janet and Reuben's  50 years of marriage (June 5, 2004).

VIRGINIA CONFERENCE
"ALL GOD'S CHILDREN" SUMMER CAMP

Family Ministries Fun

Volunteer male and female mentors (age 17 and up) are needed to help staff these annual camps for children of incarcerated mothers. Sponsored by the Bishop's Initiative on Children and Poverty, these experiences are for children ages 7-11.  Although mentors do not lead activities, they provide supervision and companionship to the children in their daily activities, mealtime, and bedtime rituals. It is an intense and challenging experience. There are four camps this year:

August 1-6 at Camp Highroad (week-long overnight)
August 9-13 at FFA/FHA Camp in Smithfield (Day Camp)
August 15-20 at Westview on the James (week-long overnight)
September 24-26 at Camp Overlook (weekend overnight)

To receive an application form, or for more information, visit www.vaumc.org.

Talent Night on May 16 was a huge success. This popular event encouraged visual arts talents as well as stage talents. Joe Bear was the Master of Ceremonies for the event, with almost 40 talented Methodists participating. The highlight of the evening was Dot Roth and her high-school baton routine. You go, girl!  Many thanks to our very talented church friends.
Lemonade-on-the-Lawn will return this summer on the second Sunday of each month, beginning Sunday, June 13. Come visit outside for a few minutes after the 11:00 service and enjoy cookies, lemonade, and your church family.
Our annual summer picnic will be held on Sunday, July 25 at 5:00 PM on the church grounds. A special treat will begin at 4:00 when our choir children, and those from Southview UMC, will present the musical
God with a Capital “G” in our gym. All VBS teachers, participants and families are also invited to this exciting evening.
Family Ministries is proud and excited to offer these fun-filled family activities for every member of SRUMC!
Thanks to all that help make it possible.

THE MEDALLION AWARD, in appreciation for outstanding support of the Samaritan Offering in 2003 for the mission of Virginia United Methodist Homes, Inc., was presented to our church at the annual meeting of the Hermitage Guild at Cedarfield in Richmond on March 18.  The award, which is displayed in the hall wall beside the parlor, is presented for contributions over $10,000 in support of the Samaritan Fund which provides assistance for those residents who are unable to fund their care.  Rev. Bill and our Hermitage Guild Representatives Doris Cutright and Virginia Shaver were present to receive the award on behalf of our congregation.  We are grateful to God for this generous support in the name of Christ.

Creating Healthy Congregations Workshop
June 6,  3:00—9:00 PM

Our leaders and members of our congregation who have signed up to participate share in this opportunity to help our church focus on a common vision for our ministry and to enhance communication and unity among us.  This workshop will be led by Rev. Don Hawks, pastor of Weyers Cave UMC, who has extensive experience in working with congregations committed to developing vision and enhancing relationships.  This workshop follows up on the Senior Pastor's series of sermons during the month of May entitled The Household of God:  Three Keys to a Healthy Life.  Please pray for our leaders and members as we consider together how South Roanoke Church shall live out our mission:  As Christ Cares, We Care!

THE CONGREGATION OF ROCKINGHAM COURT UNITED METHODIST needs your prayers at this time. On May 14, one of our very active members, Adam Wickham died at William Byrd Middle School during his gym class. After running the mile, Adam told his coach he didn’t feel well and then collapsed. He was never revived. The doctors say his heart just simply stopped beating and there was nothing that anyone could do. Adam was an eighth grader and 14 years old. The Wickham family is a large family and a large part of this congregation, and they have all watched Adam grow up. What the minister of Rockingham Court would like to do is invite you to send cards of support and encouragement to this congregation from our congregation. Adam’s family is receiving lots of cards, but sometimes the church family also needs to receive those same expressions of love. The church’s address is: Rockingham Court United Methodist Church, 4615 Bryan Road, Roanoke, VA 24014.                                                                       -Jo Ellen Hetherington, Pastor

THE FAMILY OF JANET AND REUBEN KNOPF invites the congregation to drop by the Fellowship Hall following services on Sunday, June 6 to help celebrate Janet and Reuben’s 50 years of marriage. The actual wedding date is June 5.
