October 19
Laity Sunday

Dr. Lee Anne Steffe

You are asked to read and study the text each week in preparation for worship.

(Remember) the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35

The Apostle Paul shares with us a saying of Jesus which does not it self appear in the Gospels. This unique kernel of wisdom shared by Paul is consistent with our Lord's concern that we must live our lives in life-enhancing ways. In this spirit the church is called upon to teach us how to do just that.
Each year your church takes the opportunity to lift up the importance of financial stewardship. This is never a matter of simply funding the church's annual budget. It is a matter of ultimate importance for your own spiritual health. Whenever the church invites us to consider how we manage the giving of our financial resources we are all given an opportunity to grow in faith and in our relationship to God.

    CONSECRATION SUNDAY
, October 12, is the concluding celebration of this educational experience we are now sharing together. Lay persons have shared their personal stewardship stories, dinner reservations have been taken, and I have preached in preparation for this experience in the life of South Roanoke Church. Rev. Charlene Beethoven, pastor of Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church in Richmond, will be our guest preacher this day to guide us in our growth. Her family and your parsonage family have been close friends for some time. I take particular personal pleasure in having invited her to guide us.
    This entire experience is focused,
not on the need of the church to receive funds, but the need of the giver to give. Once persons of faith make their peace with God in a systematic, regular, sacrificial offering in response to God's love for them, life's priorities have a way of falling into place with sufficient grace for all of life's challenges.
I look forward to this experience in the life of our church and urge you to plan on faithful attendance each Sunday that we all may grow closer in relationship to God and with one another!

Bill Davidson, is pleased to announce that the Wednesday night Contemporary Worship Service will begin again on Oct. 1, 7:00 PM in the sanctuary. Rev. Bill will bring the message for the service on October 1.

Staff Vision and Covenant

STAFF VISION
To become a unified team
.

STAFF COVENANT
-Prayer for each other and the congregation
-Share regular devotional study for spiritual growth
-Gather weekly in staff meetings
-In openness and honesty support and enhance each other’s ministry to fulfill our mission.

We invite your prayers for us as we seek to help shape the body of Christ (the congregation) into the image of Christ. We also commend this vision and covenant to each committee, class, and group of our church as a model for your work together!

Pictorial Directory Committee

Do you like looking at pictures? How do you feel about graph paper?  Do you always have a camera in your hand? Would you like to get a first hand look at the new pictorial directory? The Pictorial Directory Committee needs you. We are looking for any and all volunteers who would like to help pick a cover, design activity pages, organize proof photos, schedule appointments and so much more. I guarantee we will have fun. We will need to meet a couple of times in September and then about once a week in October. Please consider being a part of this ministry as it does involve everyone in the church and reaches out to all of us. Call Jeanne Whitaker at 989-5551 for more details.

Submit Your Pictures

We are looking for pictures taken during recent church events or those in the near future. The Pictorial Directory Committee would like for you to submit your photographs for consideration as a part of the many activity pages that will be included in the new directory. Please place them in an envelope with your name written on it and leave them in the church office or give them directly to Jeanne Whitaker. We will return them to you once the directory is completed in October. Get out your camera and catch some fellow church members busy at work and play.

Pictorial Directory

On October 7 through the 11, we will be taking pictures for the 2003 Pictorial Directory. Appointment sign-ups will be held on the first two Sundays in September. Please come by one of the directory tables. On September 7, we will be set up in the fellowship hall from 9:30 to 10:00 AM and then after the worship service in the front of the church and also in the education wing. On September 14, there will be tables set up after the worship service at the same two locations. Sign-up early to schedule a time that is best for you and your family. Other times in the church office. Should you have any questions, please call Jeanne Whitaker at 989-5551.

CELEBRATE SUNDAY SCHOOL

Wow!! What a day! 194 people came to celebrate Sunday school. It was a joyous occasion for everyone. As Directors of Christian Education we were amazed, delighted and humbled. We were amazed at how the people of South Roanoke responded to the call of their church. and how the teachers came together to meet the needs of the members. We were amazed at how the ministers rose to the occasion and brought it all together.  We were delighted with the members who eagerly volunteered to do whatever was needed to bring about this celebration. It was a delight to experience the leadership of our new pastor Bill Davidson and the support he received from our church's staff. We are blessed to have such an excellent cast of leaders to guide us as we grow in our personal relationship with God and His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. We were humbled by the lack of complaints related to the breakfast shortages.
We thank everyone who participated in getting the 2003/2004 Sunday School class year off to a great start.
We ask that you pray for the success of Sunday School. We need your continued participation. Next Sunday remember to bring a friend. Let’s persist in our efforts to grow Sunday School.
As it says in the Great Commission.
Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19-20).

Your comments ideas and suggestions on how to make Sunday School even better are welcome. You can call or write us or use our E-Mail KUELZE@INFIONLINE.NET
