Characteristics Of A Growing Church How does one identify a growing church? There is no
need for speculation in this area. Studies of growing churches across the
nation have been made and they have at least seven things in common. Dr.
Lyle Schaller has listed these seven characteristics of growing churches
in one of his books. Dr. Schaller is one of the leading authorities in
this area in our church. The seven characteristics are: Let’s pray for the leadership of God’s Holy Spirit to make our church a growing and influential church for Christ and His Kingdom. May God’s richest blessings always be yours. See you in church Sunday! Yours in Christ, Amos Rideout |

You are invited to
join with the Wimmer Class during the four Sundays of May for a study
series titled
Some People You Ought to Meet!
It will introduce you to the personalities which have shaped our faith
and influenced our theology and beliefs. Doug Newman will lead the

This month we are highlighting Praise Band member Doug Scott. Doug is the son of Tom and Robin Scott. Doug and his family attend church at First Presbyterian Church. He has been an active member of his church's Youth Program as well as the Kirksingers. Doug has played drums for the past two years in our Praise Band. Doug and fellow Praise Band member Tanner Hall have formed a band called Read More Movies. They have played at Festival in the Park, Chili Cook-Off, and at various Patrick Henry High School events. Doug's favorite song is "Carry the Light". He enjoys playing in the Praise Band because he is able to use his musical talents in worship. Doug is a senior at Patrick Henry High School. He has been involved in many school activities including the Marching Band and Foreign Language Club. Doug will be attending the University of Kentucky in the fall and plans to major in either English or Journalism. Thanks Doug for all you have done and Best Wishes next year. |

May 2-4, 2003 will be an exciting time for Christians in the Roanoke Valley and throughout Southwest Virginia. Franklin Graham, son of renouned Evangelist Billy Graham, will present one of only two Festivals available in the United States this year. This is an excellent opportunity to participate with thousands of like-minded individuals who believe that Jesus Christ is “the Way , the Truth, and the Life”. All Festival events are open to the public free of charge at the Salem football stadium. Graham will preach on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 PM, and Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM; the Saturday night program is particularly aimed at students. Saturday morning at 11:00 AM will be a special program featuring “Bibleman” (Willie Aames) aimed at the younger children. No tickets are required, but a large audience is expected at each event. Early arrival is recommended since admission will be on a first come-first seated basis. Participation in this Festival can be the opportunity to impact your life for years to come, and even eternity.
After 4 years as SRUMC coordinator for IHN, you would think I would no longer be moved by watching the families move into our youth house with all of their belongings in Hefty bags. It always puts a lump in my throat and the day it no longer does is the day I should walk away from this program. Last week, we hosted 5 families in the network and it was one of the most rewarding and fun weeks I’ve experienced. One single mom and her toddler son stayed only one night, but the rest of the families got along like they were in one big happy family. Many of the volunteers told me how much they enjoyed spending time with this group. We need to keep them in our prayers as they work hard to provide a new life for their families. Please take a moment to thank each of the following volunteers for their dedication and commitment to the IHN program. Most of them are repeat performers and without them, we could no longer be a host church. Also, thank Bruce Muncy for being our newest overnight volunteer. He did a great job and certainly picked a good week to spend the night. If there are folks in our congregation who are thinking about volunteering to stay overnight, but are intimidated by the thought of it, please talk with Bruce and he will share his experiences. Thank you all for another week of showing some very deserving folks what the love of Christ is all about. Diane D’Orazio

SUNDAY SCHOOL—Matthew 28:19-20 the
Great Commission says, “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost, teaching
them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” Sunday School
at South Roanoke UMC does just that. It provides a comprehensive organization whose
core is made of wonderful dedicated teachers. They accept the truth of the
Bible and head for its application to current living. Members are engaged
in regular, meaningful, relevant Bible study. Teaching God’s word they
challenge us to make decisions about our relationship with God and our
Savior Jesus Christ. The environment found in a small group of caring
individuals who meet regularly to encourage and support one another,
centered on the Bible, provides the best possible setting for the work of
the Holy Spirit in conviction and regeneration. Join us at Sunday School
this Sunday (9:45 a.m.), and every Sunday you possibly can, in the study
of God’s word. If you need help finding the right class call Pat/Emil

THE PROCEEDS FROM THE LENTEN OFFERING
will benefit ministries near and far. Half of the proceeds up to
$6,000.00 will go to help an Appalachia project at the Jubliee Center in
Sneadville, Tenn. this August. A large group (30-40) of youth and adults
have planned to go this year and it will be a wonderful collaboration
between our church and a ministry we’ve been supporting for several years.
The Jubilee Center helps a community in one of the poorest counties in our
nation. This project will provide repairs to the existing center and to
homes in the community. There will be opportunities to lead Bible studies
and share in fellowship with the town’s youth who depend on the Jubilee
Center for spiritual and emotional guidance. The other half of the
$6,000.00 will go to support missions in Kenya including a possible
mission trip to Kisumu by Dr. Diane Dorazio. The trip will not take place
if the US State Dept. determines that Americans traveling abroad is
unsafe. Dr. Dorazio will be living and working at an orphanage and
community health clinic in Kisumu for 3 weeks. Also, time will be spent at
the Agape Children’s Home for street boys in giving guidance with the
agriculture program. Any proceeds that exceed $6,000.00 will be divided
three ways between local, national and world missions. Don’t let the many
needs overwhelm you. Your generosity in the past has touched many, many
lives. You’ve helped to shine a light in the darkest of places. Thank you.
Use one of the envelopes in the pew for your gifts. |
