Lent and Spiritual Growth Spiritual Renewal is a live subject, often talked about in many churches of all denominations today. It is assumed that most church groups in general, and individual Christians in particular, recognize that they have not reached their spiritual potential. Each of us is aware that this is true in our own lives, and in our own church, and we should have a strong desire to do something about it.
During Lent, March 5 –
April 19, we will have an opportunity to focus on spiritual growth. In
both the Sunday Worship Service at 11:00 AM and the Contemporary Service
on Wednesday at 7:00 PM, God’s challenge for our lives will be lifted up.
Each member of South Roanoke UMC is urged to support these services in
three ways: Let us also plan to be present for our Maundy Thursday Communion Service on April 17 at 7:30 PM. Indeed, Christ sacrificed his all for us. Can we do any less than live sacrificial lives? Spiritual Renewal is not simply a matter of our spiritual growth; it is also a matter of social concern. For that reason we are reminded of the poor and dispossessed. Jesus says, “As you did it to one of the least of these you have done it unto me.” As Christ has fed us, let us go forth to feed others. In
Christian Love, |

Thank You from CHIP |
The Adult Fellowship Group |
|
On behalf of the
staff and families of CHIP, please know how much we appreciate the
contribution that South Roanoke United Methodist Church makes to our
organization. In addition to monetary support, members donate their time
in various areas at CHIP - from driving the church van to enable parents
to attend parent meetings, to doing computer work, to serving on our
board, to assisting with fundraisers, to serving as Provider Liaisons,
to stuffing envelopes for mailings and answering phones, to making
pizzas to send a dozen CHIP kids to Camp Alta Mons in the summer. Your
efforts help us continue our mission at CHIP - where "CHILDREN WHO HAVE
HEALTH HAVE HOPE." |
We are a traveling group! Off we go on March 13 to historic Appomattox, VA. This will be a day trip for a walking tour of the town’s historic houses, visit to their simulated historic village, the Visitors center and Antique Car museum, and antique and craft shops. Lunch in the historic part of town. Our luncheon at the church will be followed by a demonstration by Betty Nevin, an instructor of BODY RECALL for Roanoke County Parks and Recreation and for Brandon Oaks. She will present an introduction to this form of flexibility and balance exercise. Some strengthening and endurance is included. This program is a part of a series of programs to help us develop, and/or maintain comfortable, enjoyable and productive senior years. |

Contemporary Worship Service |
|
|
Please join us for fellowship and worship at 7:00 pm on Wednesday nights at the Contemporary Worship Service. Wednesday night Lenten services during the month of March will be lead by our ministers. Lenten messages will focus on the “Seven Last Words of Christ”. Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm each Wednesday prior to the service. The meals will be prepared by members of the CWS committee. There will be a charge per night per person of $5 (no more than $15 per family) to defray costs. Please complete weekly a reservation form and place in offering plate or contact the church office to make dinner reservations. The CWS Committee would like for the congregation to become better acquainted with the members of our CWS Praise Band. This month we are highlighting Kevin Jones, Director of Contemporary Music. He is married to Melia (also a member of our Praise Band), and they have a three year old daughter Miranda. Kevin grew up in Toronto, Canada. He was active in the Anglican Church of Canada and served as an altar boy when a teenager. Later, in college, Kevin sang in the Anglican Cathedral choir in London, Ontario. Kevin studied music education at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada; piano performance at Berkeley College of Music in Boston, Mass; and acting (musical theatre) at The American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York City. Kevin has spent the past ten years working in professional theatre as an actor, musical director, and keyboard player. His performances have taken him all over the United States and throughout Europe and Asia. Kevin met his wife Melia while they were both working on a production of Evita in Pennsylvania. Locally, Kevin has worked on eleven shows at Mill Mountain Theatre. On Sundays, Kevin serves as the Music Director for the Smith Mountain Lake Church of the Brethren. Kevin founded the Kevin Jones Performing Arts Studio five years ago to provide musical theatre opportunities for teenagers. Kevin sees the South Roanoke United Methodist Church Contemporary Service as a service created “by the people for the people“ and a way for all of us to be spiritually uplifted during the work week. The service incorporates drama, liturgical dance, and special music into our worship experience. Kevin encourages more church members to use their God-given gifts and to get involved with the service in some way. Special needs include lay speakers to share their message, someone to run the sound system during the service, and new praise band members after many of our current members graduate in June (we especially need a drummer). Please contact Kevin if you are interested in participating in the service. |
