YOUTH SUNDAY

You are asked to read and study the text each week in preparation for worship.

There is still time to set your course for 2003. A few days remain in January. As of this writing, the Super Bowl is a future event. Spring vacations have not started.

Perhaps the “Hoorays” shared below will wet your appetite for meeting the challenges that lie ahead. They were printed in the January edition of the Aldersgate Agenda, Charlottesville, Virginia.

12 Healthy Hoorays for the New Year

1. Our hope is in the Lord. Even though we have considered all the facts, there is still hope in Christ.
2. Ask for help. God’s gifts are in the people around you.
3. Laugh out loud – at yourself, with others, and give people permission to laugh.
4. Take care of your body – it’s the only one you will ever have!
5. Say “thank you” to people as often as you can.

6. Look for trouble – more specifically, look for the troubled...the lonely, the sick, the naked, those who think God has forgotten them.
7. Talk to children regularly.
8. Remember your present mood is never permanent.
9. On a scale of 1 to 10, your friends deserve a 12.
10. Remember that life is not fair, but God is gracious.
11. Be the biggest picture window in the Gospel that you can be!
12. Things are not always as they seem. See life through the cross and the Easter resurrection.

God bless us all as we journey in uncertain territory this year. May the certainty of God’s love keep us hopeful each day

In Christian Love,

Amos Rideout

Lee's wife; Kenmore, home of Betty Washington, sister of George; Mary Washington's home, brought for her by George; and other sites in and around Fredricksburg, VA. We might even get a dinner cruise on the River! This trip is being planned for May 6 an 7, 2003. Cost and specific plans will be coming soon.

Advent Angel Program

HELP NEEDED

Our Advent Angel program was a huge success! We provided gifts for 89 children at Henry Fork Service Center and Clearbrook Elementary in Roanoke County, with 41 of those children being on our special need list. ReportS from Henry Fork and Clearbrook are that they are overwhelmed by your generosity. A very special thank you to everyone who participated in the Advent Angel program.

I made a New Year's resolution to walk the Roanoke Valley Greenways this year. I have a hard time doing this activity alone. Is there anyone who would like to join me in this endeavor? I am going to start (weather permitting) on Thursday, January 23, 2003. with the greenway in Smith Park. It is just one mile in length, (2 miles round trip) all level and paved. Give me a call at 774-6568 if you are interested. I hope someone will help me.    Romona Williams.

A Thank you note

I wanted to express my thanks and appreciation for your generosity at Christmas. Your gifts were a true expression of your concern for others. The parents that picked up the gifts were overwhelmed by your generosity and I know that the gifts made Christmas a wonderful day for all the children. Folks like you are a blessing.

Karen Pendleton, Clearbrook Principal

Interfaith Hospitality Network

“Mission Of Miracles” Yard Sale

We have been blessed with a number of new volunteers helping us take care of the families of the Interfaith Hospitality Network so we decided it would be a good idea for all of the volunteers to get together. Daren Gunter, the director of Interfaith Hospitality Network, will come to our church on February 9 and hold an informal volunteer meeting right after the Sunday worship service at approximately 12:15. Refreshments will be served. We will discuss Interfaith Hospitality Network rules and regulations and difficult issues such as discrimination, sexual harassment, child care, etc. This is the time for all of our volunteers to voice their concerns and suggestions. Our goal is for all volunteers to enjoy their experience with the families and feel confident in the responsibilities. Please let Diane D’Orazio (725-9886) know if you can attend of if you have any questions Thank you for all you do!

It’s almost that time again for everyone to clean out their attics and garages! We need your stuff! Our last two yard sales have been huge hits with $2400 and $3000 being raised, respectively, for foreign missions. The money has allowed 5 needed organizations in Kenya to buy medical supplies, provide mosquito netting for two orphanages, and allowed a home in Kenya for former street boys to develop an agriculture program. That’s why we’ve named this annual yard sale the “Mission of Miracles” because the results have truly been a miracle! Since we always have so much stuff left at the end of the sale, we’ve decided to try to sell more be having it over a two day period. That will require more volunteers so please let us know if you can help us either Friday of Saturday. We’ll be sorting and tagging items the week before the sale and we can use your help then too.

This is a wonderful time of fellowship so don’t miss it! You can bring items to the fellowship hall from Friday, May 30 until Thursday, June 5. If you need someone to pick up items, please call Diane D’Orazio at home (725-9886) or by cell phone (797-9886). Also, if there are folks who have pickup trucks and can help pick up large items, please let Diane know. Thank you so much for your support in the past. We hope to see you in June!
