Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes. Our congregation’s finance committee has selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year. New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his of her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, November 10, |
we are asking our attendees and members to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world. Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge people to attend who feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card. We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship our guest leader will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship. We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the Consecration Sunday team and governing board members. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship. Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events.

Council on Ministries Monthly Focus - Interfaith Hospitality Network |

South Roanoke UMC has a long, strong commitment to Interfaith Hospitality Network in Roanoke, We are able to provide housing in our youth house and many individuals have served as overnight volunteers to our guests there. Cave Spring UMC has served as co-volunteers for the evening meals for the last two years. But, as of November 3, they will no longer serve this mission. Therefore, we need more helpers to step forward to help furnish evening meals for one week every three months. |
The meals are simple – soups, salads, spaghetti, hamburgers, chili, macaroni and cheese, etc. You can also purchase pizza or subways and some one will serve them if you are unable to work at the kitchen the night that the meal is served. Please consider giving your time and talents to this church sponsored ministry. Call the church office or Janet Jeffries (345-9669) to offer your service to IHN and South Roanoke UMC. |

Our praise band, under the able direction of Kevin Jones, consists of Steve Wilkinson, Tanner Hall, Matthew Gregory, Austin Mundy, and Doug Scott. Three of our youth have been chosen to staff our state wide Youth Retreats for the Va. Conference of the UMC. They are Katherine Witt, Brian Bear and Ashley Ingram. They will accompany Tim Dayton as they go to lead our 800 youth in worship, study and service on the weekends of Nov 8-10 and Nov 15-17. Brian Bear will be leading workshops on Puppet Ministry and Cartooning for Christ. Emily Wallace will lead a workshop on Liturgical Dance. Note the new UMYF (Sunday Night) Time! 5:30-7:30 PM. During UMYF on Sunday evenings, our youth will be emphasizing their personal relationships with God, sending care packages to our college students, working at the Rescue Mission, and mapping out their own faith journeys. Looking ahead: We hope to offer free baby sitting on Saturday, December 7, so you can go Christmas shopping. Let Tim know if you are interested.
College Students Back at School This year we have 23 church members away at college. This includes 7 new freshmen and 2 graduate students. ( Bob Rude has retired from medicine and gone to law school!! Whit Hall is at the University of Texas in the school of engineering.) As we did last year, we will be mailing the students a package 3 times during the year to keep in touch and to let them know that their church family is thinking of them. In the fall the Junior and Senior High Youth groups assemble an assorted box of goodies which is always a surprise and delight to the receivers. We will also be pairing up church members and students as pen-pals. Actually, this is probably a one-way correspondence, but it can be great fun! Just pick a student and from time to time and on their birthday mail a funny card or note. It can mean so much to one far away! Please keep this group in your prayers as they confront the pressures of studies and making friends. The following are our college freshmen: Hadley Adkins (VCU), John Budd (Un. of Tenn.), Elizabeth Green (Va. Western), Courtney Minton (Un. of GA), Jan Steffe (James Madison Un.), Matt Wallace (Washington & Lee), and Lauren Woody (Mary Washington College). If you would like to be a pen-pal with a college student, please call Tallulah Gregory at 982-2535. |

Columbarium and Memorial Garden Most columbariums are constructed after commitments by members are sufficient to underwrite a portion of the costs, with future income structured to pay off the debt over an extended period of time. Our Columbarium and Memorial Garden is a gift to the church. The plan is to keep costs of usage at a level to maintain the facility. To accomplish this, fees for niches and plaques were initially priced on the conservative side for the first year. At this time, the decision has been made that an upward adjustment in cost is necessary to cover anticipated increases in both plaques and labor for the next two years, effective January 1, 2003.
It was anticipated that there would be more interest in the Memorial
Wall plaques. A current member who has lost a spouse may purchase a plaque
in memory of one and reserve a space to be used at the time of their
death. Also, there are many former members who were active, made
sacrificial gifts, and contributed much to the early church and especially
the construction of our present property. Many of them still have family
elsewhere. Dotty Carder and Virginia Shaver along with others are
researching these contacts so that they might be aware of this option to
memorialize their parents or grandparents in this manner. They would
appreciate any information that would be of help in this effort. |
