The summer season, so long anticipated, has come and gone. I hope that you were able to arrange a few days away during this season of the year, for vacations lend themselves to rest, recreation and gaining new perspectives. Your parsonage family’s vacation, August 5-19, was a much needed experience. Now that the fall is upon us, and the children are back in school, we have opportunity to respond to God’s love with great commitment, especially in studying God’s word on Sunday during the Church School hour (9:45 AM) and during the celebration of worship at 11:00 AM. We now have 762 members; of this number, about 700 live close enough to the church to attend weekly. Some, of course, are elderly and others work a “shift” schedule and are unable to worship and study on a regular basis. However, we can do better than 284 for worship and 77 for church school (the 2001 average). (The average worship attendance includes the Wednesday night Contemporary Service.) |
To all members, especially to those who are not regular in their attendance at church, take note of something the Rev. Roy Everett wrote some years ago: “Let us be regular in our church attendance. We need the church and the church needs us. More important, all of us need God, and we discover His presence through worship. Without Him we are lost. Take time for regular church attendance”. Regular worship and study are essential to our growth as Christians. See you at the Lord’s House next Sunday! Yours in Christ, Amos Rideout
P.S. “If we have more
business than we can attend to in six days, it is likely that we have
taken on more work than we have business with”.

Education Sunday |
Music Ministry |
|
Sunday, September 8 will be Education Sunday at South Roanoke UMC. Teachers who taught during this past Sunday School year will be recognized and teachers for the 2002-2003 year will be dedicated during the 11:00 service. This day marks the beginning of another year for Christian Education within our church. This is promotion Sunday and children will be beginning their new classes, which correspond to their grade level in school. The preschool, kindergarten, and elementary levels will continue their studies using the Biblezone curriculum materials. This fall’s unit of study is “Favorite Bible Stories.” Children’s Sunday School classes are on the first and second floor in the children’s education wing. Middle and high school classes will meet in their area. Special units are planned to meet their age level interests. Sunday School begins at 9:45 AM. |
The fall choir program begins with rehearsals on September 8. The Kirksingers (youth) begin at 5:00; the children’s choirs at 6:00; and the adult handbells at 5:00. The Chancel Choir continues its schedule on Thursdays at 7:30 PM. We will have a meeting/rehearsal to organize the youth handbells on Tuesday, 9/10, at 2:30 PM. This is for middle and high school ages. We will discuss a schedule to best serve all who want to participate. (If you are interested and cannot make this meeting, let me know so I can work with your scheduling needs.) There is an information sheet available in the choir room with the plans/activities for each choir. Come by and pick one up and join us in this meaningful way to serve your church – and have fun doing it! |

ANNOUNCEMENTS |
|
GUESTS and VISITORS are welcome to join us at South Roanoke for worship and fellowship. We invite those who have no church home to make South Roanoke your church and add your witness to ours. And for a modern worship experience, join us each Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. for our contemporary service. YOU WILL BE PLEASED TO KNOW that The Reverend Dr. Richard Worden will be our Homecoming speaker on September 15. Richard served South Roanoke as pastor from 1972 to 1975. Spread the word about Homecoming. Invite former members and friends to the service. THANKS AND APPRECIATION are
expressed to the ladies of the church who took part in cleaning the
chandeliers in the sanctuary. They are just sparkling now, and there are
no cobwebs to be seen. We appreciate each and every one of you, and want
you to know that you are very important in the life of the church. |
