Facing Our Fears

You are asked to read and study the text each week in preparation for worship

This month I would like to lift up two truths in regards to the church:

1. Where there is no vision, the people perish.
2. The church that fails to plan, plans to fail.

As we look at the remainder of our church calendar for 2002, we need to ponder these truths, especially as they relate to the Council on Ministries Retreat, July 22-23. We will be meeting to share ideas and suggested goals for 2003. I trust that our hopes and dreams for South Roanoke UMC will be grounded in our faith tradition. We cannot long survive or be engaged in authentic ministry unless we are faithful to God’s call in Jesus Christ.

South Roanoke is a church of the people. You have the right and responsibility to share what you believe we need to be doing to continue the work of Christ. Therefore, I am asking that you contact the staff of the church (which includes me) or any Council on Ministries member, to share your hopes and dreams for South Roanoke. The names of Council members may be located in the Yearbook of our church.

Let us be people of vision who plan for how we can be a faithful church of God. God bless us as we prepare for this most important task.

Agape,
Amos Rideout

Summer Worship Schedule

Beginning Sunday, June 2, our summer schedule will start. We will have two morning worship services; one at 9:00 and one at 11:00 AM. Sunday School Classes will begin at their normal times. This schedule will continue through the last Sunday of August.

The Wednesday Contemporary Service continues at 7:00 PM.

The Council on Ministries’ Monthly Focus
Church and Society ———————————————
THE QUESTIONS: “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?

THE ANSWERS: Members of SRUMC deliver Meals on Wheels to the elderly. They drive CHIP children to doctors' appointments and help behind the scenes so these little ones and their families have the care and nurture they need. Homeless families are welcomed and cared for through the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Individuals and groups donate food and clothing and eyeglasses through local organizations. Others raise money to send children to camp. Some tutor children, provide for abused women and children, or work with the community on issues of poverty, race, and decent housing.

THE PROMISE: “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you have done it unto me.”

The Work Area on Church and Society encourages and helps in such outreach in our community. In addition, with the guidance of the Council on Ministries, it recommends projects to receive funds budgeted for community outreach, “putting our money where our [hands and hearts] are.”

Chair,
Ruth DeVerter

Missions Yard Sale

It’s time to clean out your closets again and just in time to help support the yard sale SRUMC will be hosting on Saturday, June 8th in the Fellowship Hall. The proceeds will go to support the Agape Children’s Ministry mission which Diane D’Orazio will be joining to go to Kisumu, Kenya in July. The Agape Children’s Home in Kisumu provides a future for 110 former street children who were the victims of the AIDS epidemic and abuse.

If you have items you would like to donate to the sale, please contact Diane D’Orazio at home (725-9886) or by cell phone (797-9886). The church Fellowship Hall will be open the week before the sale for you to drop them off or call Diane and she can arrange for them to be picked up.

We will need folks with some time and a pickup truck or van to help move items from Diane’s house to the church during the week before the sale. Also, people are needed to help price items during that week and to help sell the day of the sale. Please let Diane know if you can help in these ways also. Thank you!!
