Worship Times Our regular worship time on Sunday is 11:00 AM. Sermons For March Watch and Pray Matthew 26:41 March 10 March 17 March 24 March 31 You are asked to read and study the text each week in
preparation for worship |
Lent is about forgivenesss, reconciliation with God and one another. Recently, Dr. Robert Roth passed along to me an article that is fitting for this season of the Christian year. Thus, I share it with you. Forgiveness Boosts Health; NEW YORK, Dec 28 (Reuters Health) - To err is human and to forgive divine, according to the old adage, but humans who forgive are known to experience significant physical and mental health benefits from doing so. Now researchers report that these beneficial health effects appear to vary by age, along with the willingness to forgive others, the willingness to forgive oneself and the feeling of being forgiven by God. "Taken together, our findings emphasize that forgiveness is a multidimensional phenomenon," write study lead author Dr. Loren L. Toussaint of the University of Michigan and colleagues. "There are age differences in some forms of forgiveness and in their relationship to health." Their conclusions are based on survey responses from more than 1,400 adults during a 5-month study period. In general, young adults (18-44 years) reported that they were less likely to forgive others than middle-aged (45-64) and older adults (65 and older). They were also less likely than older adults to believe that they had been forgiven by God, the investigators report in the Journal of Adult Development. Among survey participants of all ages, however, reports of forgiveness of themselves |
and others were associated with decreased psychological distress, including feelings of restlessness, hopelessness and nervousness. Further, young adults who reported high levels of self-forgiveness were more likely to be satisfied with their lives, whereas middle-aged and older adults who reported high levels of forgiveness of others were more likely to report increased life satisfaction. But not all forgiving is immediately beneficial, the findings suggest. Proactive forgiveness--asking for forgiveness, rather than granting it--was associated with increased psychological distress among all study participants. Other acts of proactive forgiveness would include asking God's forgiveness for hurting someone or praying for someone who has hurt them. The researchers speculate that this may be because such proactive individuals are "'taking the first step' in the process of forgiveness," which may lead to heightened stress. In other findings, attendance at religious services was associated with decreased psychological distress, particularly among young and middle-aged adults, and increased life satisfaction among young and old adults. Service attendance was also associated with higher self-rated health among all age groups. Think on these things. Forgiveness is the way of the cross. May we find ourselves in the grip of God’s love.Yours in Christ, Amos Rideout |

| The Good Shepherd Columbarium and Memorial Wall | Missions Report |
|
The Columbarium Committee wants the membership to know that everything is complete, and ready for any member who wishes to use it as an alternative to burial. This could consist of reserving a Niche for future use as well as immediate needs. In addition, there is a Memorial Wall where Plaques memorializing former members of the church and their spouses may be mounted. Spaces may be reserved for future needs if desired. Dotty Carder is working with a group of long time friends who might like to participate. If anyone has useful information in this regard, it would be appreciated. Those having an interest in either of the above should contact a Committee member for documents, assistance or further information. Committee members are: Dickey Linkous, John Christopher and Dave Burrows. The formal Dedication service of the facility will be held immediately after the church service on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2002. |
One of Afghanistan’s greatest
needs is help in renewing the education of their children, especially
the girls who have not been receiving schooling because of the years of
war and devastation.
Now that schooling for children has begun again, there is a need for school supplies and through the United Methodist Committee on Relief, we can get school kits to them. This is an urgent call for these kits in order to reach the children as soon as we can. Contact the church office or Tallulah Gregory, Moonyeen Rideout or Diane D’Orazio for information about the contents of each kit. The kits will be collected at church and will be dedicated on March 10, 2002 during the worship service. |
| Aftercare Social Club | Lenten Offering |
| Join us this month when we meet at the church on March 12 at 6 to eat, play games and make plans for the upcoming year. Tell bonnie dayton (981-0237) if you would like to get involved. We meet every 2nd Tuesday. |
The COM has approved dividing our Lenten offering between the ASP Mission Project and the Agape Mission Service of Dr. D’Orazio. Any amount received over their needs ($12,000), will go to local missions. |

The service will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Tenebrae (meaning "shadows"), an early eighth-century service, was once observed as an all-night vigil. Our service adapts it as an extinguishing of the lights indicative of the flight of the disciples following the Last Supper, and the darkness that fell over the earth as the Son of God was crucified. The music, A Service of Darkness by Dale Wood, vividly portrays the suffering, pain, ugliness and horror of Christ’s death on the cross. THE ROANOKE DISTRICT SINGLES FELLOWSHIP will meet on Sunday, April 7 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church. If you would like more information about this group, call Terri Allen, 725-1991. |
