February 24
Youth Sunday

You are asked to read and study the text each week in preparation for worship

What are you giving up for Lent?

This question brings many different responses, often having to do with giving up sweets, weight loss, favorite television programs and modification of destructive behavior patterns. The list is quite exhaustive. Our acts of self denial are good in that they cause us to focus on the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross.

Perhaps a more important question, though, is, “What are you adding for Lent?” Some years ago I recall leading a Lenten study by Maxie Durman, Alive In Christ. It encouraged the participant to walk with Christ through daily Bible study and devotional reading, prayer, and journaling. The hope was to develop discipline in our devotional life. It was a blessed experience for some forty persons.

We can have that kind of spiritual growth at South Roanoke this year. The first Sunday in Lent is February 17, 2002. Therefore, let me suggest some positive actions for this season of the Christian year:

* Obtain a copy of the Sanctuary for Lent from the church narthex. It is a devotional resource to guide our spiritual journey toward Calvary and Easter Sunday.

* Commit yourself to regular attendance at Sunday School and worship. Remember that Jesus went to the temple to study and worship. We all need what the “gathered” community receives in order to “scatter” for service in the world.

* Stretch yourself a bit and attend the Contemporary Worship Service on Wednesday nights, particularly during March. The sermons will be based on “the seven last words of Christ”.

* Commit yourself to certain acts of Christian service that move you beyond the pre-occupation with self. Remember that Jesus sacrificed his very life that we might enjoy a better life.

Of course we will offer the traditional Ash Wednesday Service on February 13, and Maundy Thursday Communion and Tenebrae on March 28th. What is new this year is the addition of a “Love Feast” on March 27. You will receive more information about these services at a later date.

Lent is a most significant part of the Christian story. Whatever path you take this year, may it lead you closer to the Christ who came to help humankind live with freedom and thanksgiving.

     Yours in Christ,
     Amos Rideout

The Council on Ministries’ Monthly Focus
Music —————————————
Worship and music have had a close relationship in all the history of the Christian church. Every great period of revival has involved the use of music to speak the message to the people. The choir is an extension of the congregation, not an isolated group of performers. Their good singing, as representatives of the congregation, is the result of hard and consistent work to praise God with worthy music, well done. One bishop has said, “The choir is doing what every member of the congregation would do if he had the talent and the time to do it.” As a volunteer organization, we depend on people with ordinary musical abilities who are dedicated to this most extraordinary form of worship.

The music program of South Roanoke UMC offers vocal choirs and handbell choirs for every age group. The children’s choirs sing periodically for worship services and present staged programs during special seasons. The youth choir joins with the youth of First Presbyterian Church for rehearsals and services. The adults perform several special programs each year, usually with instruments, in addition to providing music for the Sunday worship service. Also, there are solo recitals and programs presented by visiting groups.

There is always a place for you in the music program of South Roanoke. There are no auditions, so all are invited to be a part. If you would like more information, call Joe Kennedy (344-4437).

The Adult Fellowship Group

February 14, 2002 (note the change of date) the Adult Fellowship will have as their luncheon guest, Estelle Avnor, Executive Director of the Bradley Free Clinic. Estelle will present a program on the history, mission and work of the Clinic. Included will be information as to who is eligible to receive services from the clinic and how you can help with this mission. We hope you will be able to attend to learn about this valuable service to our community.
March 14, 2002 the Adult Fellowship will have the opportunity to visit the "Backstage" and other parts of the Jefferson Center's Shaftman  Performance Hall, Fitzpatrick Hall,

and learn more about the Jefferson Center and its many services to the community. Join us for this trip at 10:00 AM on 3/14/02.
Plans are being made for a trip to Ashe County, NC with an overnight at the Methodist District Conference Center and then on to Old Salem on May 15 and 16. Cost of this trip has not be determined but it will be approximately $100. We plan to travel by bus and can accommodate up to 34 persons. There is a poster outside the office with information and sign-up space. Help with the planning by indicating your interest as soon as possible.

The Weekday Preschool

Registration for the Fall, 2002-2003 school year of the Preschool opened on January 27 to all current students and to the South Roanoke Church membership.  Due to demand, we are expanding our current Mother’s Day Out program to 5 days and offering a Tuesday-Thursday class starting on February 5th.  This class will be a Mother's Day Out class geared to two-year old children.  Those interested in signing up a child should contact Cathy Bear (982-3707) ASAP. With the addition of Tuesday-Thursday in our program, we may have more openings for students on Monday, Wednesdays, or Fridays, so please let me know if you are interested in picking up an additional day or two. Our MDO program is open to children 15 months through 2 years of age.

There will be a meeting of the Weekday Preschool Committee on Wednesday, February 20, at 7:45 PM in the preschool office.

The children of South Roanoke United Methodist Weekday Preschool and Mother's Day Out would like to extend special thanks to everyone who helped make our Christmas program a “BIG” success. With the support of special people like Dawn Long, Tim Dayton, Steve Wilkinson, and Jay Williams, our children were able to present the Christmas story through word and song. We are so fortunate to have such helpful church members.

Advent Angels Up-date

A Huge Thank You to our South Roanoke Methodist family for your support of our Advent Angel project! You provided Christmas gifts for an amazing 110 children, including 42 kids on our most needy list! Those 42 children received all of their Christmas gifts from us.
With many families in Franklin County and rural south Roanoke County (Clearbrook area) out of work, this project was desperately needed this year. Your response to these children was so generous that we had enough money left over after shopping for gifts that we were able to provide grocery store gift certificates to some families who needed help!
We are so fortunate to be a part of such a loving, caring church family. Thank you!

THE ADVENT ANGEL COMMITTEE

“You really practice the true meaning of Christmas by reaching out with your hearts to make a difference in people’s lives.” –Cris Flippen, Principle

“Your out pouring of gifts was desperately needed by many families here. Thank you for your giving spirits and for thinking of others during the crazy holiday rush.” –Carolyn McLucas

“Thank you for your contribution to help God’s work at the Henry Fork Service Center. Your loving generosity is greatly appreciated!” -Susan Putnam, Director
