When
the subject of stewardship is raised, most of us immediately think of
money. While stewardship does involve how we use are financial
resources, we need to quickly assert that it also involves the way we
live our lives. This truth is expressed in such a refreshing way in the
book Mother Teresa: Love Stays. I share it with you: People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered. LOVE THEM ANYWAY. When you do good, they will accuse you of egoism and ulterior motives. DO GOOD ANYWAY. If you are successful, you will make false friends and real enemies. BE SUCCESSFUL ANYWAY. The good that you do will be forgotten tomorrow. DO GOOD ANYWAY. Sincerity and openness make you vulnerable. BE SINCERE AND OPEN ANYWAY. |
What you have built up over the
years of work can be destroyed. BUILD ANYWAY. Your help is really needed, but people may attack you if you help them. HELP THEM ANYWAY. Give the world your best, and it will knock your teeth out. GIVE THE WORLD YOUR BEST ANYWAY. In just a few months I will celebrate my sixtieth birthday. I have lived long enough to know that life is good, but also challenging. It is sad when people spend their time devoted to less than what is good and honorable in God’s sight. Therefore, let me encourage all of us to follow Mother Teresa’s stewardship directive – even in the midst of impending war. The benefits are beyond belief! Shalom, Amos Rideout |

The Council on Ministries’ Monthly Focus Missions————————————————— Last July, Tim Dayton led a work team of 14 youth and 7 adults on what has become an annual mission event for our church. The Appalachian Service Project sponsors work projects in several different areas throughout Appalachia each summer. Our team went to the work center at Chavies, KY, where we spent a week working in area homes. The work represented a variety of chores, including painting, drywall, insulating, roof repairs – you name it and we did it (or at least gave it our best shot). Our work teams witnessed some very tough living conditions and at the same time all of us drew inspiration from the level of commitment we saw in each other, particularly the youth. For anyone interested in participating in future ASP activities, contact Tim or anyone else who has participated. You will also have a chance to hear more about ASP at the contemporary service scheduled for Oct. 10. Steve and Diantha Hodges, our missionaries at Jubilee Center, Hancock County, TN, continue to be God’s mission team in Sneedville, an Appalachain community. Since our delegation visit last Spring, the Jubilee Kitchen has opened for business! The “Hodge’s Missionary Letter” of July recorded four upbeat testimonials and the following news: “Two dozen farmer/kitchen users are forming a co-op for support, purchases and marketing strategies! Twelve businesses are using or getting ready to process foods; local people are training to process foods through our food bank project! Jubilee Youth are on a mission trip at the Soup Kitchen in Morehead City, NC. We are praying this will be a tremendous time of spiritual growth and challenge! The ATEC computer center hosted people using computers here more than 500 times in June! We are challenged to make repairs on the heat pump and cooling systems costing $1200.” Steve and Diantha send greetings and gratitude for ongoing support by our congregation for this vital Mission service in the Name of Christ. A commitment to global missions has lead SRUMC to get involved with several important ministries in East Africa. Maua Methodist Hospital in Meru, Kenya has received our support over the past 3 years. American United Methodists missionaries there, Jerri and Bill Savuto, share with us through their “Maua News” emails how the light of the Holy Spirit reaches deep into the darkness of human suffering. Kisumu, Kenya, one of Roanoke’s Sister Cities for the past 25 years, is in great physical and spiritual need. A new clinic is being built in nearby Kadhola and our Missions Committee has donated funds to help in the project. Recently, a missionary midwife from England, Liz Sayers, spoke in our church about her work in Kisumu, Maua, and Kadhola. Her slides and stories showed what God and “spirit led” people can do in a country the rest of the developed world would like to forget. Through global mission, people can realize what a small world we live in. The folks in Africa may live under very different circumstances from us, but in the eyes of our Lord, we are no different. They feel the same emotions we feel: joy, sorrow, loneliness, and they too crave the peace that only comes from our Heavenly Father.

| Finance Committee Report We have not made any payments on the following budget items: Habitat for Humanity, Pastoral Counseling Center, RAM, Rescue Mission, West End Center, CHIP, Red Cross, Roanoke Service Project, Volunteers Mission Project, Henry Fork Center, local outreach for church and society and local outreach for missions. If you are behind in your pledge we ask that you please bring it up to date so that we can meet some of these obligations. |
Hosanna Choir (grades 1-5) Through the fall months, the Hosanna choir is studying about our worship service and learning anthems that are about worship topics. Some subjects to be covered are stewardship, baptism, offertory, thanksgiving, prayer, praise, and benediction. They will also learn a hymn each week and learn the responses (Doxology, Gloria Patri) used in the services. Part of each rehearsal is spent learning to play handbells and choirchimes. All children in this age group are invited to join us on Sundays at 6:00. |
Final UMW Cookbook Printing The UMW Cookbooks will soon have their third and final printing. The cookbooks will go to the printers on November 1. We anticipate their return about one week later. If you have already ordered more cookbooks from June Tegenkamp (342-7784), you are on the list. If you have not ordered cookbooks, or would like to change your order, please contact June no later than October 31. The price is only $6.00 per cookbook. The cookbooks would make great Christmas presents! |

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS |
| YOUR ATTENDANCE IS VERY IMPORTANT! Our
financial campaign is about to begin. You will be hearing more about it
in the next several weeks. Your attendance is very important at the
worship services on Sunday, November 4 and 11. You will be given some
important information on November 4, at the 11:00 a.m. service, and on
the 11th you will be given your pledge card, and you will have the
opportunity to present your card at the altar. Following the worship
service on November 11, you are invited to stay for a catered luncheon
in the Fellowship Hall at which time you will be given the total of
pledges for 2002. Please plan to attend both of these Sundays, and
by the way, the luncheon will be FREE.
BECAUSE OF OUR "CONSECRATION SUNDAY" emphasis, the November Holy Communion schedule has been changed. We will celebrate the Lord's table on Sunday, October 28, rather than November 4. Your understanding in this matter is much appreciated. |
